Every send is a problem solved. Stacked up, they draw a portrait of progress — wide at the base, sharp at the top.
I started climbing to escape screens and sit-down problems, and stayed for
the movement, the community, and the way it strips everything back to
the essential: can you hold on?
Checking your gear before a climb is its own kind of focus —
the harness, the belay device, the knots. A ritual that quiets the mind
the same way a research problem does.
The gym is inside a converted church. While you work a problem,
saints and angels watch from the ceiling fresco above.
There's something right about that. The total focus bouldering
demands — every limb, every weight shift, every breath — feels
close to something sacred. Or at least, close to flow.
Both demand the same thing: the ability to stay with a hard
problem when every instinct says to let go. The beta is out there —
you just have to be willing to try every sequence until something clicks.
That willingness to fail repeatedly in pursuit of understanding —
that's the game. In research, on the wall, through the lens.
